INTRODUCING
THE BURN ONE / PLANT ONE PROGRAM
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Processing wood and paper isn't just part of our business, it's our entire business. We're conscious of that fact. We want to give more than we take, and what better way to do that than planting trees? Our goal is to eventually be carbon neutral with our paper products and processing. That's why we partnered with the great team at One Tree Planted, where we’re working with them to plant a tree for every online order we receive over $15.
To start, we'll be working within California, which has suffered more damage from wildfires in 2020 than any other year. We are excited to play a small part in restoring and protecting our forests and wilderness. California has thousands of tree species native to the state, and the team at One Tree Planted allows us to nurture those specific species, as well as others when we move to a new state. In California, we will be planting a variety of tree species including Sugar Pine, California Redwood (State tree), Maple, Elderberry, Willow, Birch, and many more.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
To date, we've planted thousands of trees, but we're shooting for millions. So how can you participate? Easy - just shop online and we will plant them for you!
For every order over $15 you place on zigzag.com, we will plant a tree on your behalf!
Why it matters
Rolling Papers And Trees
Let’s talk paper. As a rolling paper company, we want to understand our impact on the environment and plant life. A variety of plant fibers are harvested to make paper, and wood (trees) is one of those plant fibers. We craft all of our rolling papers from a key group of fibers: hemp, flax, soft wood, and hardwood. Some smoking papers use no wood (tree-free), while others have a blend of multiple fibers or exclusively one type of fiber. Wood fibers are actually key ingredients in the ultra-thinness of many Zig-Zag rolling papers. It’s the most malleable fiber that stays strong while still being ultra-thin, plus it's eco-friendly. Using a blend of softwoods and hardwoods has a combined advantage of strength and thinness because of the different lengths and densities of the fibers, helping keep Zig-Zag rolling papers sustainable.
The trees Zig-Zag uses for wood fiber papers are chosen and harvested in a responsible, sustainable manner with complete respect for nature. Zig-Zag only selects wood from carefully controlled logging operations that meet very strict criteria like those set by FSC certification. Essentially, the wood we use comes from sources that are managed to best preserve biological diversity and benefit the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability.
We want to continue looking for ways that we can lower and offset the impact our products have on the environment. Which is why we started planting trees. Have you ever asked yourself “How many rolling papers could a single mature tree make?” Well, that might not be a normal thought for everyone, but here at Zig-Zag, that kind of question will occasionally pop up. We put down the paper and picked up a pencil. After doing some rough math we came to the whopping number of about 1 million sheets of rolling paper. Give or take 250K depending on the size and weight of the paper.
So why does this matter? Well firstly, it’s an interesting little factoid to share while you’re rolling up your next one, but more importantly, it means every time you shop at zigzag.com you could be planting one million rolling papers worth of tree back into the ground. We obviously aren’t harvesting these trees we plant, but it's just one more way of giving back to mother nature for all of the love she gives to us.
Simply put: You burn ‘em, we plant ‘em.
